Smart video doorbells are a useful upgrade, especially if you miss deliveries or want to see who is at the front door before answering it.
We recently installed a wired eufy video doorbell for a homeowner on Blackberry Lane in Four Marks. The property was a detached three-bedroom home, and the customer wanted a more reliable way to deal with parcel deliveries.
They were often at home when deliveries arrived, but still ended up with “sorry we missed you” cards through the letterbox. They also wanted to avoid paying an ongoing subscription for a doorbell service.
That made a wired eufy video doorbell a sensible option for them.
Before fitting the doorbell, we checked the proposed doorbell position, Wi-Fi signal, power supply requirements and the route for the new cable. There was no existing doorbell wiring or transformer to reuse, so the installation needed planning from scratch.
That planning matters. A smart doorbell may look like a small device on the wall, but a reliable installation depends on the wiring, transformer, Wi-Fi signal, mounting position and how neatly the cable can be routed.
Can an existing doorbell cable be used for a smart video doorbell?
Sometimes an existing doorbell cable can be used, but only if the wiring and transformer are suitable for the new device.
Many older doorbell systems were installed for a simple push button and chime. They were not designed for modern smart video doorbells. A video doorbell may need a different voltage, a more reliable supply or a new transformer, depending on the manufacturer’s requirements. Some Video Doorbell kits come with their own transformer, other will need one supplied by us.
At this Four Marks property, there was no existing doorbell wiring available for the new unit. That meant we needed to install a new supply arrangement rather than trying to adapt something unsuitable.
This gave us a clean starting point. It also meant we could plan the cable route properly and choose the best position for the doorbell rather than being forced to use an old bell push location.
Why does the transformer matter?
The transformer matters because a wired smart doorbell needs the correct power supply to work reliably.
A common problem with wired video doorbells is an old, missing or unsuitable transformer. The doorbell may power up, but that does not always mean it is receiving the correct supply.
An incorrect transformer can lead to missed notifications, intermittent operation, charging issues or the unit restarting. This can be frustrating for the customer, especially when the whole point of the doorbell is to avoid missed callers and deliveries.
On this job, there was no existing transformer. We installed a doorbell transformer and fitted a small consumer unit arrangement to house it neatly and safely.
That meant the eufy doorbell had a proper wired supply from the start.
Is a wired video doorbell better than a battery doorbell?
A wired video doorbell is often better for reliability, provided the wiring and power supply are installed correctly.
Battery-powered units can work well where no wiring is available, but they need charging as part of normal maintenance. For some customers, that is fine. For others, it becomes another job they do not want. It is also worth noting that the screws that hold the video doorbell on their bracket are usually very small, easy to drop, and easy to lose.
This customer wanted a doorbell that would work reliably without routine charging. They were missing parcel deliveries and wanted the doorbell to be ready when someone came to the front door.
A wired installation suited that requirement. It removed the need to keep taking the unit off to charge it and gave the customer a more permanent setup.
Where should a video doorbell be positioned?
A video doorbell should be positioned so it gives a clear view of visitors and the entrance area.
Position matters more than people think. If the unit is fitted too high, it may miss parcels left on the doorstep. If it is fitted too low, the view of visitors may be poor. If it points towards the wrong area, the customer may get unnecessary motion alerts or poor coverage of the front door.
At this Four Marks property, we fitted the doorbell on the right-hand side of the front door. That position gave the best coverage of the entrance and allowed the customer to see visitors and parcel deliveries clearly.
We also had to think about the cable route from the transformer to the doorbell. That was the main installation challenge on this job. The doorbell position was chosen for coverage, but the wiring still had to be routed neatly and safely.
Does Wi-Fi affect a smart doorbell?
Yes, Wi-Fi has a major effect on how well a smart doorbell works.
The front door can be one of the weaker Wi-Fi areas in a property, especially in larger homes, older properties, houses with thick external walls, or homes where the router is positioned towards the rear.
A weak Wi-Fi signal can cause slow notifications, poor live video, missed recordings or connection problems. The doorbell may be wired correctly but still perform badly if the wireless signal is poor.
For this Four Marks installation, we checked the Wi-Fi signal at the front door before completing the setup. The signal was good, so no additional Wi-Fi work was needed.
That is always worth checking before fitting the unit. It avoids installing a doorbell in the right physical position but then finding the app and live view do not perform properly.
Can older homes in Four Marks have smart doorbells?
Yes, older homes can have smart video doorbells, but the installation needs to be assessed properly.
Many homes around Four Marks, Medstead, Ropley and Alton were built long before smart doorbells existed. That does not prevent installation, but it does mean the existing wiring, chime, transformer and mounting position should not be assumed suitable.
Some properties need a new transformer. Some need new cabling. Others need an alternative position because the original doorbell location does not suit a camera.
At this detached three-bedroom property, there was no existing doorbell wiring or transformer to reuse. The solution was to install the correct transformer, provide a suitable supply and route a new cable to the doorbell position.
The age of the property is not the deciding factor. The wiring, power supply, Wi-Fi signal, cable route and camera position are what matter.
Does the customer need a chime and app setup?
Yes, most customers will want the chime and app set up before the job is finished.
A video doorbell is only useful if the customer knows how it alerts them and how to view visitors. Some systems use a plug-in chime, some rely mainly on the mobile phone app, and some can use both.
For this installation, the chime plugged into a socket in the hall. We also set the app up on the customer’s mobile phone so they could see visitors and parcel deliveries from the doorbell camera.
That handover is an important part of the job. The installation should not end with the doorbell fixed to the wall. The customer needs to know it works and understand how to use it.
Is professional video doorbell installation worthwhile?
Professional installation is worthwhile when the doorbell is wired, when a transformer is needed, or when the customer wants a neat and reliable finish.
Some battery doorbells can be fitted by a homeowner. A wired unit involves more planning. The power supply needs to be suitable, the transformer must be installed correctly, the cable route needs to be safe and tidy, and the doorbell position needs to give useful camera coverage.
For this Four Marks installation, we installed the eufy video doorbell, fitted the transformer, provided a small consumer unit arrangement to house the transformer, checked the Wi-Fi signal, installed the chime and set up the app on the customer’s phone.
The final result was a happy customer who could see when parcels arrived and had fewer missed-delivery cards through the letterbox.
