Just had an EICR done on your Farnham home or rental property?
Failed EICR - The Codes Explained
You’re probably looking at a list of confusing codes like C1, C2, FI, or LIM. But what do these codes actually mean – and what do you need to do next?
Understanding your report is key to ensuring safety, staying compliant, and avoiding unnecessary costs. Let’s break it down.
What are EICR Codes?
An EICR includes a detailed report of your electrical system’s condition. Any faults or concerns are listed with a code:
- C1 – Immediate Danger: Something poses a direct risk of electric shock or fire. Example: exposed live wires or scorched sockets. This must be made safe before your electrician leaves.
- C2 – Potentially Dangerous: Not yet dangerous but could become hazardous. Example: no RCD protection or damaged cabling. Needs fixing soon. The report will be marked “unsatisfactory.”
- FI – Further Investigation Required: Something seems off and needs deeper inspection. Often used when test results are inconsistent or historical signs of damage are present.
- C3 – Improvement Recommended: Your electrics are safe but could be updated to meet modern standards.
- LIM – Limitation: The electrician was unable to access or fully test part of the installation. This doesn’t mean unsafe, but highlights areas not assessed.
What Does a ‘Satisfactory’ vs. ‘Unsatisfactory’ Report Mean?
✅ Satisfactory – No urgent safety issues. You’re good to go!
❌ Unsatisfactory – At least one C1, C2, or FI issue found. Repairs recommended.
