Unlike neighbouring market towns such as Petersfield, Farnham, and Alton, Bordon's development is rooted in its military significance. Established as an army base in the late 19th century, Bordon Camp was first laid out in 1899 by the Highland Light Infantry, directed by Royal Engineers. The camp became operational in 1903, housing regiments like the Somersetshire Light Infantry and the 2nd Battalion Devonshire Regiment. During both World Wars, the Canadian Army was stationed here, leaving behind remnants like concrete slabs used for parking tanks and armoured vehicles. The town was also home to the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME), who provided trade training supported by the School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (SEME).
